Trump has made his goals very clear. He announced that there would be no tariffs if Canada became the 51st state. He has stated that no other conditions would persuade him to remove the tariffs. We are now in a fight for our country’s survival. My wife, many of our friends, and I will be boycotting US goods and services as much as possible, including canceling our Netflix and Amazon subscriptions. I certainly won’t be shopping at Trump ass-kissing Bezos’ Whole Foods anymore.
On Sunday, Trump posted on his social media site, “Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!”
It has become clear that Trump wishes to absorb my adopted country, Canada, as Hitler absorbed my birth country, Austria, in 1938 (Anschluss).
Here are some reasons for Canadians to resist Trump’s proposed Anschluss.
- There is no rule of law. Trump tried to overthrow the government and got away with this crime and others because, as president, he had stacked the judiciary. He pardoned all the members of the insurrectionist Jan 6 mob, including the most violent ones. Further, even before this administration, the common application of instruments like civil forfeiture and plea bargaining often results in the punishment of innocent people. The present weaponization of the Justice Department, and the persecution of people who attempted to investigate Trump’s crimes is sickening to watch.
- The current president is an ignorant, lawless thug. The examples are now just too exhausting to begin to enumerate. But he spawns new acts of depravity each day. Just read any truthful media. I could suggest the Guardian, The Economist, or The NY Times. The Guardian is free. The Thug, like Hitler, has tried to discredit the legitimate news. To a great extent, like Hitler, he has succeeded.
- One of the two main political parties, now in control of all levels of government, is utterly corrupt and unequivocally supports the Thug.
- The tech oligarchy supports the lawless president to keep enriching themselves. Media safeguards and fact-checking have been taken down.
- There is no Universal Health Care. In the US, people can go bankrupt due to medical expenses, even if they have insurance. We Canadians don’t consider the US a developed nation in this regard.
- Environmental protections are quickly being dismantled under Trump. He just ordered the release of water from two reservoirs (Lakes Kaweah and Success) in central California to fight wildfires in LA. He doesn’t seem to understand that there is a mountain range in between and that water doesn’t run uphill. He just dumped a lot of water that farmers will need in the spring and summer. Trump’s thoughtless policies will precipitate future environmental and health catastrophes.
- Financial and consumer safeguard regulations are quickly being dissolved. This will inevitably result in another financial crisis as in 2008 — after the last time the Republican party took a wrecking ball to financial safeguards. Recall that Canada turned out to have the cleanest banking system in the world. We have what you call “regulation.”
- The erosion of the separation of Church and State in the US. Religious Nationalism is scary anywhere, whether it is Islamic, Hindu, or Christian. It is always authoritarian and intolerant.
- Gun violence. Need I say more?
- Members of the Media and other critics of Trump routinely receive death threats. There is no condemnation of these threats from the president or the Republican party leadership. These fascist tactics have now become part of the regular cultural fabric in the US.
- Enough people in the US voted for the Thug to reinstate him as president. What can I say? That I don’t want to share space with these brainwashed idiots? I don’t.
I’m so sorry to see the country that did so much to liberate Europe and rebuild it under the Marshall Plan descend into Fascism. I have seen what brainwashing can do. My grandmother was a Nazi until the day she died. It’s terrible to see that madness rise again. We Canadians want no part of it. We will resist.
